Mantra is a Sanskrit word consisting of the root man "manas or mind" and the suffix tra meaning, tool, hence a literal translation would be "Mmind Tool". Mantras interpreted to be effective as sound (vibration), to the effect that great emphasis is put on correct pronunciation (resulting in an early development of a science phonetics in India). They are intended to deliver the mind from illusion and material inclinations. Chanting is the process of repeating a mantra. Gayatri Mantra (The mother of the Vedas), the foremost mantra in hinduism and Hindi beliefs, inspires wisdom. Its meaning is that "May the Almighty God ill uninate our intellect to lead us along the righteous path". The mantra is also a prayer to the "giver of light and life", the sun (savitur). Goddess Gayatri is closely linked to Saraswati (goddess of education) and Lakshmi (goddess of wealth).
